Self Funding Magazine attends The 81st Annual National Association for Health Underwriters Conference in San Antonio!

June 30th, 2011 No comments

Assistant Editor, Jenny Dodson with Self Funding Magazine attended the 81st Annual convention for the National Association of Health Underwriters in San Antonio, Texas June 26-29, 2011. The National Association of Health Underwriters is made up of over 100,000 professional health insurance agents and brokers who provide insurance for millions of Americans.

The first day they began with a very patriotic start as NAHU member Jennifer Davault sang the National Anthem followed by Past NAHU President, Donna Carnall leading the Pledge of Allegiance. CEO Janet Trautwein began the session with discussion surrounding some of the challenges and opportunities that faced the industry over the last year. She was joined on stage by the President of NAHU, Steve Selinsky and they both had a candid discussion on health care reform and the efforts made by NAHU to continue involvement with change in the Health Care industry. They both gave very positive outlooks on the future for agents in this industry. Following Janet and Steve’s discussions, Keynote speaker, Theo Androus gave an enthusiastic presentation on selling concepts as well as his experience as it relates to the selling process. The day wrapped up with a reception in the Exhibit Hall where attendees seemed to catch up with old friends and mingle with exhibitors.

The next day proved to be even more engaging as the morning kicked off with an Exhibitor Continental Breakfast featuring a variety of providers such as Conexis, Access Plans, USA, vsp, Humana, Vertafore and many more. In many Exhibitions you find exhibitors on their phones and basically uninterested in the networking experience. Here the exhibitors mentioned along with most at this conference came out from behind their displays and offered valuable information to the attendees leaving the impression that they truly wanted to be there and were enthusiastic about the networking taking place. This was followed by an energetic and hilarious motivational speech delivered by Jason Young, author of Culturetopia. In his opening remarks, he sarcastically referred to the book title by stating, “I chose that name of the book so it would be easy to Google.” This spawned laughter from the group that did not stop. In the end, Jason received a standing ovation for his motivational teambuilding speech. The rest of the day had various professional development breakout sessions. The Self Funding breakout sessions seemed well received. A particularly interesting presentation was delivered by Gerald W. Frye, President and owner of The Benefit Service Group, Inc where he gave NAHU members a discussion entitled “Get n the Driver’s Seat with the Right Strategy, Data and Tactical Execution.” He sited reasons for why data may not be up to the task of meaningful decision making on benefits due to various analytical data discrepancies. He further said that more attention to the way the data is developed and reported is needed. He gave insight on why a strategic plan for the agent’s clients’ benefits can be in need of realignment.

Another interesting touch at the conference were the Daily News Papers which detailed the previous day’s event and spoke of the events to come. The attendees seemed to feel this was a nice touch as many were heard discussing the candid photos that had been taken and printed during the event. The event was well attended and overall appeared to be an informative event for the members of NAHU.

Medical Tourism

June 7th, 2011 No comments

There are some great articles in the 4th issue of the Self Funding Magazine. I enjoyed reading the article “Using Medical Tourism to Drive Down High Dollar Medical Claimed” by Jonathan Edelheit. Medical Tourism is a great option for those who are self funded. You can really save a lot of money! Major surgeries can be very hard on companies, but if you can reduce the cost drastically by sending patients overseas you should take advantage of this. It is great to think outside the box to help cut costs. http://www.selffundingmagazine.com/article-detail.php?issue=issue-4&article=using-medical

“A Commitment to Employers”

The Self Funding Employer Healthcare and Workers Compensation Conference is geared towards employers and is driven to, not only, educate Employers, but act as the liaison for The Self Funding Industry. We are so devoted to expanding the industry, that we have structured our budget for this year’s conference to pay for up to 200 employers to attend. This year’s conference should have the largest amount of employers out of any US healthcare conference.

View Our Conference

Employers, health insurance agents and consultants are currently in the dark when it comes to learning about self funding and partial self funding their healthcare or workers compensation program, and how to find the best reinsurance carrier, third party administrator, PBM and other vendors. This Self Funding Conference is the one event per year where employers, brokers, agents and consultants can learn:

• How to implement a Self Funded healthcare plan or workers compensation plan and immediately save on their group health insurance or workers compensation insurance costs.

• What the benefits and savings are when self funding a healthcare or workers compensation plan.

• How to choose vendors, such as third party administrators (TPAs), PBM’s, and other vendors.

• How to find the best reinsurance carriers and how to negotiate for the best reinsurance terms.

• Dispelling the myth behind PBM fees and rebates.

”Partners Rx is looking forward to exhibiting at the upcoming Self Funding conference. One of our goals as a Prescription Benefits Manager (PBM) is to partner with our self funded clients to help them effectively balance prescription cost management with plan flexibility that meets their membership needs—all without sacrificing quality, affordable pharmaceutical care. We look forward to the opportunity to meet with prospective self funded clients at the conference to see how our approach to the PBM industry might help them make quality-based decisions that lead to more efficient cost control, improved outcomes and increased member satisfaction.” Said Neely Burkhardt, Marketing Managers, Partners Rx

Partners Rx is one of the largest privately owned PBMs in the country. “We’re in this business together” is not just our tagline, it’s our business philosophy. We work with our clients to make prescription benefit management cost effective and user friendly.

Other service providers are excited to attend and really incorporate corporate wellness into their Self Funding Philosophy.

“As a Self Funded Company we are excited to finally have a convention that is geared to the issues unique to companies that have chosen to be self insured. We’re excited to not only attend but also exhibit this year and provide complimentary prevention screenings for attendees. In self funded corporations a focus on wellness and prevention is key to keeping health costs in check” Said Jet Blizzard, VP Corporate Services, Life Line Screening

Life Line Screening’s Chronic Disease Prevention Program provides state of the art wellness screening program to allow employees to find out their risk for chronic disease at an early stage when it is most affordable to treat and prevent. Their services are provided by their full-time staff to over one million participants each year at over 20,000 event locations. All reports are reviewed by a Board Certified Physician and mailed confidentially to the employee’s home. Results are held electronically and can be integrated into your managed care or disease management platforms for full circle of care. Multiple delivery options include onsite, community locations or a personalized Mobile Health Vehicle. Complete integration with disease management, health coaching and incentive program integration services to engage your employees in proactively preventing chronic disease.

With the hype of Healthcare Reform, now is the time for a facilitator to step in and take control of the industry and really educate these employers, agents, TPA’s and other Healthcare Professionals in the Self Funding realm.

“The upcoming Self Funding conference is the right conference at the right time. The Healthcare industry has seen recent legislative changes hit the industry like water from a fire hose.
